1 KIS BELGART-KIÁLLÍTÁSLESŐ: LEFFOLOGY A MAISON LEFFE-BEN (Visiting Maison Leffe in Dinant)

(For English translation read more.)

This weekend I've learnt more about the proceeding and consuming of Belgian beers. We've visited Dinant which small town is located on the Walloon part of Belgium. Mainson Leffe is a museum which is fully dedicated for Leffe beer and where we've been led through the procedure of brewing Leffe. At the end the tour has been 'crowned' by a glass of Leffe.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe02.jpg

A Maison Leffe a Maas (franciául: Meuse) folyó két partján elhelyezkedő Dinant városában található.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe03.jpg

So, as I've mentioned Maison Leffe is located in Dinant which is on the two sides of river Maas (Meuse in French). One of the most famous Belgian beer, Leffe used to be brew in Abbaye de Leffe by the brothers and regarded as a drink which protects the health. Abbaye de Leffe still exists and located in Dinant on the other side of river Maas than Maison Leffe. Obviously Maison Leffe isn't the original Abbaye de Leffe, but a monastery of a former order of sisters. As you need to register yourself in advance to visit Abbaye de Leffe and we haven't known this fact, we didn't visit it (next time, hopefully).

Let's back to Maison Leffe. This building complex consists of a hotel, museum and restaurant which has been placed on the former courtyard. As we've already booked our hotel (which is the most greatest castle hotel where I've ever stayed) and had lunch, we only visited the museum. An adult ticket currently costs EUR 7 and it's including the visit of the museum, a glass of Leffe beer and a really nice present which is handed over at the end of your visit. The tour is available on three languages: Dutch, French and English. At the beginning of the tour you're advised by a guide of the museum how to participate on the tour. We had a really nice and friendly guide who speaks French and English and Dutch as well (however she was a bit shy and said more times sorry for her English and Dutch). The second part of the tour can be fulfilled by yourself without any human guide. You get a card with a QR code due to the language you've chosen when you paid the entrance fee. At every part of the tour this card has to be placed to the QR code reader which is located in the built-in tables. Once the QR code was read by the reader the touch screen becomes active and you can choose from the menu. The menu contains an informative part where a brother speaks about the given part of brewing and a part which affects your senses: you can smell or touch or see almost all ingredients which are needed for the brewing.

According to the website of Maison Leffe: "Founded in 1152, Notre-Dame de Leffe was an abbey of Premonstratensian canons, i.e. monks living in a community characterised by its hospitality. Pilgrims were always welcome at Leffe and in 1420 the canons decided to build a brewery for the preparation of a healthy, invigorating beverage (diseases like the plague ran rampant through the region at that time, and the boiling of water during the top fermentation process of the Leffe beer killed all germs). After the French Revolution the abbey was re-established in 1929. The abbey church was reconstructed on the old farm grounds, as the beautiful 18th-century church had been destroyed. Each monk had a specific task and was entirely at the service of the parishes. The Leffe abbey in 1740, in its heyday: in the foreground we can see the mill with its half-timbered gable, using the water of the Leffe river. In the background, facing each other, are two enemy fortresses: the Montorgueil tower and the castle of Crevecoeur. A lay master brewer worked for the abbey and made a Leffe beer that was so delicious that the parishioners preferred to drink a Leffe on Sundays rather than go to church. The abbot had to take forceful action. The abbey and the brewery were closed during the French Revolution and seemed to be nothing but a distant memory, until the abbey was re-established in 1929. In 1952 abbot Nys and Albert Lootvoet decided to once again take up the brewing tradition of Leffe with its well-guarded recipe and offer a range of delicious Leffe beers. In the meantime, AB-InBev has taken up the torch and has made a commitment to honour the tradition of the Leffe beer, which has been brewed according to the same recipe since 1240."

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe22.jpg

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe23.jpg

However it may sound funny but we've been told at least five times that the main aim of brewing was producing more healthy drink. If you're interested in having more information about the story of Abbaye de Leffe and brewing, reading the website of the Abbaye de Leffe (means not the Maison Leffe) is recommended. The website is available in English, French and Dutch

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe24.jpg

Take a look at the picture above about the bottler machine. Beyond this machine the Abbaye de Leffe intended to use more machine to make life easier, so a bottle cleaning machine used to be used as well however in the same time only one bottle could be cleaned by it.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe25.jpg

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe26.jpg

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe27.jpg

Not only the history of the Abbaye de Leffe and brewing was presented on this tour but the ritual of consuming beer as well. Good to know that Leffe has to be served to a clean, dry, cool and proper shaped (Leffe) glass. Once you've been served by a properly filled a glass of Leffe, take a deep look at the colour of the beer, smell it, taste to foam and the beer and enjoy it. If somebody hasn't known before, he or she became aware of the proper way to enjoy Belgian beer.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe31.jpg

Maga a történeti rész legalább másfél óránkat igényvette. Mi a lelkesebb fajtából valók vagyunk, de olyan látogató csapat is akadt, akik akkor érkeztek, mikor mi már nagyon a tárlat végén jártunk (s szomjaztunk a nedűre), ám ahelyett, hogy végigjárták volna a kiállítást, ők az első monitor után feladták, elmentek inkább inni. Utána persze nem győzték azokkal a kérdésekkel szórakoztatni a múzeum őket kiszolgáló szerencsés munkatársát, amikre a tárlat megtekintése során százszázalékban választ kaptak volna megspékelve a valamennyi érzékszervünkre ható ingerekkel.

The historical part of the visit took minimum one and a half hour. However we're tired (and thirsty) a bit at the end, we listened and watched all screens and stops which weren't out of order. Nevertheless there were teams of visitors who gave up to visit all stops of the tour and went drinking instead of fulfilling it, then asked only that kind of things which could be answered on the tour as well.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe32.jpg

At the end of the tour the chosen glass of Leffe was served in the dining room of the Maison Leffe. We're allowed to choose from all types of Leffe. As I've never tasted Triple before (8.4 % alcohol content after the refermentation in the bottle) I chose that one and my partner chose Leffe Ruby. While drinking our Leffe, we're sitting on a comfortable leather coach and enjoying our beer in the cosy lights of the room.

drkuktartdinantmaisonleffe42.jpg

The glass of beer was over quite quickly and thanks for our schedule we didn't have time for another one. At the end of the tour a brand new Leffe glass was given to us per person in order to practice the brand new knowledge: serve Leffe in a clean, dry Leffe glass.

On the picture below you can see the view of Dinant from the former monastery and our gift glasses.

The museum (including the glass and the drink as well) is totally worth the price of the ticket. Informative and detailed but not over detailed exhibition plus really kind guide who is able and ready to answer all of our questions. Plus if you weren't in a good mood before the visit, after the glass of beer you start smiling for sure. Beyond the Maison Leffe, Dinant offers more attraction which is worth to visit: the story of saxophone, the building of Notre Dame and the citadel. Maison Leffe is located under 23, Charreau des Capucins, 5500 Dinant, Belgium (phone: +32 82 22 91 91), always closed on Mondays, at Christmas and New Year's Eve.
