Last week I visited Antwerp because Tomorrowland was organized in a city which is located near by Antwerp. We were lucky because we stayed in the downtown of Antwerp so we had chance to visit the city quickly. Follow me and I introduce the most beautiful shopping mall of the city which is called Stadsfeestzaal.
If you want to do shopping beyond sightseeing then good to know that shopping malls and shops are closed every Sunday.
Mi tagadás, mi pont azért tértünk be, mert kíváncsiak voltunk rá, hogy mégis mire föl csalogatják be az embereket azzal a jelszóval, hogy övék a világ legszebb bevásárlóközpontja, amikor a nálánál sokkal híresebb bevásárlóközpontok - például a londoni Harrods vagy a párizsi Galeries Lafayette - is versenghettnének ezért a megtisztelő címért.
Stadsfeestzaal advertises itself as the most beautiful shopping mall of the world. We were curious why does it state that it is the most beautiful shopping mall - especially because Harrods in London and Galeries Lafayette in Paris have beautiful buildings too - so we entered the building.
A bejárat.
The entrance.
According to its website 'At the end of the 19th century, Alex Van Mechelen, the City Architect of Antwerp, was asked to create a large banquet and exhibition hall in the heart of the city. After investing 400,000 Belgian francs in a project involving eight years of hard work, the Antwerp Stadsfeestzaal opened on 22 June 1907 and was inaugurated on 8 February 1908. From then on, it was used for all kinds of festivities: exhibitions, trade fairs, balls, school parties, visits by Saint Nicholas, etc. In 1983, the Stadsfeestzaal was officially declared a listed building....
2005 végére a tető külső része elkészült. Ezt követően megkezdődhetett a precíziós munka: a belső térben található ornamentikus díszítés arannyal borítása, amely mindösszesen 18 hónapot vett igénybe.
...After years of intensive use, municipal authorities thought that the banquet and exhibition hall deserved a new use. As part of the Mercurious Project intended to upgrade Antwerp’s shopping circuit, the City of Antwerp signed a contract with Multi Development in September 2000 for the complete redevelopment of the block of buildings on Meir, Hopland, and Kolveniersstraat, along with the complete restoration and integration of the Stadsfeestzaal. In December 2000, a disastrous fire destroyed practically the entire Stadsfeestzaal. The only elements remaining were the steel roof construction, the concrete structure of the historical stairway, and the historical facades of the building. This meant that the redevelopment schedule was greatly delayed and a long process of obtaining all kinds of permits could begin. By the summer of 2004, Multi Development had definitely acquired the entire project for converting the Stadsfeestzaal. The real work could start in November 2004. Old buildings were torn down and more than 2000 lorries were filled with soil and driven away. Construction workers even discovered the bones of a whale! By the end of 2005, the outer dome had been installed and the precision work could begin: the application of gold leaf to the countless ornaments in the historical main hall. This precise, time-consuming work would take 18 months to complete but would provide the Stadsfeestzaal with its truly spectacular finished look.'
According to its website 'Shopping Stadsfeestzaal became the final element in an enclosed shopping circuit running from Meir, Huidevetterstraat and Schuttershofstraat to Hopland. In October 2007, it opened its doors with around 40 shops distributed over four levels covering 20,500 m² of commercial space. The complex also includes 49 flats and another 275 underground parking spaces.'
I really don't understand why is it allowed to use cello tape and this kind of paper on the wall of this listed building.
Az épületben középen bárok, csokoládé-, illetve ékszerbolt találhatóak a földszinti részen, míg az első emeleten a Magnum Pleasure Store kapott helyet, ahol elkészíttetheted saját jégkrémedet (erről bővebben itt írok).
You can drink or eat something in the middle of the building on the ground floor where bars are located. You also can find a jewelry and chocolate shop in the middle on the ground floor. The Magnum Pleasure Store is located on the first floor where you can order your custom-made ice cream (read my post about the Magnum Pleasure Store here).
You can find clothes shops and decoration shops in Stadfeestzaal as well.
You can buy chocolate-maker Smurfs in the chocolate shop which is located in the middle of the Stadsfeestzaal. 'The Smurfs (French: Les Schtroumpfs, Dutch: De Smurfen) is a Belgian comic and television franchise centered on a fictional colony of small blue creatures that live in mushroom-shaped houses in the forest. The Smurfs were first created and introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford) in 1958. The word “Smurf” is the original Dutch translation of the French "Schtroumpf", which, according to Peyo, is a word invented during a meal with fellow cartoonist André Franquin, when he could not remember the word salt.'
You can reach the first floor by using the main stairway or elevator or escalator which are located in the new part of the building.
Kilátás a főlépcsőről. Szemben az emeleten a Magnum Pleasure Store.
View from the main stairway. The Magnum Pleasure Store is located on the first floor in the middle.
This is the place where the old and new part of the Stadsfeestzaal are connected to each other.
Leteszteltük: ár-érték arányban kiváló, többször is használható esernyőhöz jutottunk.
You can buy umbrella for two euro from umbrella machine.
